one thing to look out for when doing a fresh install of a joomla site via ftp is to make sure you use a reliable ftp program. There are many out there to choose from but some are unreliable and 'drop' files during the ftp. This makes the install/configure a nightmare. Filezilla is good or consider using one in the joomla extensions site

Yes, I have used SmartFTP and a few others but I think that Filezilla is the best one out at the moment.
